Krawczyk Crowned MN State Points Race Champ

In an attack-filled race last Thursday, Brandon Krawczyk (Revolution Cycles/Twin Six) claimed the 2012 MN State Championship in the points race.  Krawczyk won 3 of the 8 intermediate sprints on his way to a three-point victory over Matt Montesano (Speedfix/Zubaz).  Montesano was the most consistent racer in the field, placing second or third in every sprint of the race.  Kesha Zavyalov (Omnium Racing) rounded out the podium, winning the 3rd sprint and placing in 3 others.

The early sprints were well-organized affairs, with the peloton maintaining its decorum until 2 laps before each sprint.  The 2nd sprint went to Fred Mills (Revolution Cycles/Twin Six) in a surprise attack from the middle of the pack at the bell.  A potentially decisive move with 38 to go brought Krawczyk, Montesano, Andy Kruse (Speedfix/Zubaz) and Tim Mulrooney (Synergy) to a half-lap lead.  With the two race leaders, Krawczyk and Montesano in attendance, the group seemed likely to stay away and possibly gain a lap.  Unfortunately, the heads of state were unable to collaborate and the field collected the dangerous break just ahead of the 6th sprint.

Krawczyk and Montesano continued to collect points through the remaining 3 sprints, padding their leads.  The group remained together until 15 to go, when Zavyalov and Kruse attacked, gaining 50 meters before being reeled in by Montesano and the charging field.  With 500 meters remaining, Mulrooney launched a blistering attack from mid-pack, establishing a 70-meter lead that would stick through the final sprint.  He finished just off the podium, 2 points behind Zavyalov.  Nine riders scored points in this hard-fought state championship event.

Masiulis Secures Muscle Milk Miss 'n Out Series Victory

Despite a season-ending injury, Gabe Masiulis (Omnium Racing) rode his first and second place finishes in two of the Muscle Milk Miss 'n Out races to the series title.  Josh Kruck (3 Stars Cycling) took the final event last Thursday.  Kruck edged Aidan Orchard (University of MN), after Orchard was relegated in the pair's final sprint.  Orchard's 2nd place finish secured a tie with Mark Leppke (Behind Bars/LGR) for 2nd place in the series standings.
